Introducing Selkie’s Coat: A Fiber Blend Inspired by Sea and Story
This one's for the sea lovers and myth chasers. Selkie’s Coat is one of the first custom blends I created for Stag & Spindle, and it holds a special place in my heart. Inspired by the Scottish folklore of selkies—seal folk who shed their skins to walk on land—this blend captures both the softness and wildness of the sea.
The Story Behind the Blend
In Scottish legend, selkies live as seals in the ocean but can come ashore by removing their seal skins. If a human hides the selkie's skin, the selkie is bound to stay on land. There’s something beautifully bittersweet about these stories—the tension between freedom and connection. I wanted to create a blend that felt just as layered.
Selkie's Coat brings together the soft shimmer of silk, the natural loft of fine wool, and a touch of sparkle to mimic moonlight on water. The colorway is a swirl of seafoam blues, stormy grays, and silvery highlights that shift like tidepools. It's dreamy to look at and even dreamier to spin.
Fiber Content & Feel
Shetland – for strength and luster
Silk – for drape and shine
Stellina – for that magical glint
This fiber drafts effortlessly, especially for intermediate spinners. Beginners will enjoy it too—it has just enough grip to avoid frustrating slips but glides beautifully with a little practice.
Project Ideas
I love spinning Selkie's Coat into a fine 2-ply yarn for shawls or lacy scarves, but it also holds up well in a slightly thicker worsted-weight for a cozy cowl. The blend takes well to both short-forward and long-draw drafting.
Why You’ll Love It
Every braid of Selkie’s Coat is hand-packed and blended in small batches. No two are exactly alike, but they all carry that sense of sea-soaked myth and softness. If you love spinning as a form of meditation or storytelling, this is your fiber.
Selkie’s Coat is available now in the shop. Snag a braid and spin your own folklore.
